“Mindset”… the new buzzword, a bit like pivot (barf).

I was the same. A Marine’s daughter, born in the early 80s and a five-year-old baby, I definitely didn’t hear anything about “mindset” as a kid.

What I heard is:

“Money doesn’t grow on trees” or “Not now, it’s too expensive”.

I didn’t know it at the time, but a lack mentality surrounded me. There were never enough. And, if there was, he would leave sooner rather than later. Feast or Famine.

Miraculously, my parents put us all 5 kids through college, and I believed you would go to college and then get a job for the rest of your life. That’s what you do. Study, work, pay bills, die.

Unfortunately, that’s what happened to my father, and he was working until his death. Cancer took him so quickly he didn’t even have a chance to quit. He just took sick days. He was 71, had a C-level banking career and was still struggling financially.

Seeing him go through this and knowing that he had wanted to retire years earlier, but couldn’t get me to leave the marketing agency I was at and start my own in 2016. I had scared to dive back into entrepreneurship, but as you probably know by now, entrepreneurship is deep in your bones, something that can’t be shaken, something we keep doing even though (when) it seems crazy .

I approached my business the same as the first, doing all the “things” without much thought, feeling, or emotion about what I wanted the outcome to be.

It was only by accident that I came across “the state of mind”. Keep reading to discover the three books that helped me grow my business beyond six figures.

Book #1 — The secret

I call The secret the book gateway to the state of mind. I was introduced there by a guest on my podcast who was a multi-millionaire. What stood out was what she was going through when she found him. She was struggling financially, was single, her kids were young, and she said, “I realized no one was going to save me, so I had to save myself.”

And that’s what this book is about – knowing that we can change everything and understanding that we are far more powerful than we think while being aware that it all starts with us.

Our thoughts change our attitudes, which change our behavior, which change our actions, which change our lives.

What I like The secret is that it is easy to digest and a variety of people around the world share their experiences with “the secret”.

Book #2 — You have to think to become rich

I loved Bob Proctor from The secret so much, and he constantly talked about Napoleon Hill You have to think to become rich, so I’m reading this next!

One of the things I love about this book is the origin story… Napoleon Hill was a poor young journalist assigned to interview the richest man in America at the time, Andrew Carnegie. Unbeknownst to Hill, Carnegie was looking for someone to interview the world’s most successful people and document their common traits. During the interview, he asked Hill if he would do it without pay, and the only thing Carnegie would contribute was introductions to those successful people. Hill said yes and spent the next 20 years interviewing the likes of Henry Ford, Theodore Roosevelt and Alexander Graham Bell.

For me, this reinforces the fact that there are so many things going on around us that we don’t even realize until we become aware that they are. same to exist.

This book describes 13 principles that these people used to achieve tremendous success.

Book #3 — In tune with infinity

Where The secret made me feel warm and fuzzy, this book made me feel raw and exposed. I started to uncover layers of myself that I didn’t even know were there and didn’t realize needed to be addressed. They say that ignorance is bliss, and I didn’t know so many things!

That’s when I started looking at childhood traumas, limiting beliefs, and aspects of myself that I didn’t even know were there. I realized that I needed to let go of so many familiar feelings, emotions, and behaviors in order to grow.

Sounds simple, right? It’s simple, but it’s not easy.

You might wonder what these things have to do with running a business. For me, I would make bad decisions in my business based on past experiences and learned behaviors.

For example, I would take a needy client who wouldn’t have the budget for my services, but I would be okay with it anyway. It’s because of my childhood experiences and feelings of lack.

I realized that these underlying patterns were on autopilot, and it took me a while to step back and see what was going on. And when I did, things started to change.

I got clients because I started doing things that suited me. I could focus more because I suppressed negative chatter, which led to better results. I was able to gain confidence and clarity about my business.

“Success is 95% mindset and 5% strategy.” You can have the best strategies in the world, but if you don’t have the mindset to support them and align with them, they won’t work.

So, although I agree with The secrets “Ask, believe, receive”, there is more beneath the surface of these words. You must dig in, get uncomfortable, and do things you’ve never done before to clear the patterns, thoughts, and emotions that have been hidden away so you can sincerely believe that you will receive what you ask for. (and work).
